Utility Scale Renewable Energy Plants

Risk Assessment and Loss Investigations

Major construction projects of renewable energy plants are being announced often in all regions across the world. Even in the MENA region, countries known for dependence on fossil fuels are now leading the way to increase energy generation from renewable sources.

As countries in the MENA region move towards renewable energy, (re)insurers are facing new challenges related to the deployment of these innovative technologies into this specific region. Harsh environment and unstable political climate are only two risks that must be considered when deploying renewable energy in the remote deserts of the MENA region.

Challenges facing (re)insurers and loss adjusters that will be discussed in the workshop include:

  • Adequacy of historical weather data to use for plant design
  • Applicability of engineering standards to specific locations
  • Thoroughness of models and tests used in the design of the equipment
  • Availability of required expertise to construct, erect and operate plants
  • Reliability of parts fabricated locally for use in the plant
  • Challenges of investigating claims involving utility-scale renewable energy plants

Using a number of case studies, the presenter will host discussions meant to explore new challenges faced by underwriters, claims handlers, loss adjusters and other stakeholders when considering covering utility-scale renewable energy plants, both those under construction and operational.

This workshop is intended for all levels of insurance professionals responsible for underwriting and handling claims involving the construction, erection and operation polices of renewable energy plants.
